Silverlake Conservatory of Music Benefit Concert

The Silverlake Conservatory of Music (SCM) blossomed from the resolve of Flea and long-time friend and fellow musician Keith Barry to fill the void left by cuts to music education programs in public schools. Flea and Barry, who met at Bancroft Junior High and later attended Fairfax High School, share a love for music that was nurtured in Fairfax's music program. Passionate about the benefits of music education, their desire to give something back resulted in the SCM. “We believe,” say the founders, “that the study of music enriches not only the life of the musician, but the community and society as well.”

Los Angeles' famed Wiltern Theater plays host to a special concert benefitting SCM on May 14, 2008. Alternative is supplying limited-edition tees featuring the surprise Grammy Award-winning headlining talent (to be released publically May 5, 2008). The benefit is directed toward the youth of Silverlake, but children and adults from all areas of Los Angeles are welcome and encouraged to attend.

SXSW

Alternative proudly teamed up with SXSW as the official apparel sponsor for a second year in a row! This year’s SXSW shirts – printed on Alternative tees, of course – were at multiple locations throughout the festival and are still available at the SXSW online store.

While at the week-long fest, Alternative’s street team was all over Austin handing out branded guitar picks offering customers a special discount when they shop with us online. Alternative was also on-hand giving out special goodies to artists who performed. The Shout Out Loud event held on Saturday the 15th at Orchid was a HUGE success! The event, taking place at the Grand Ballroom of the Pacific Electric Lofts, features tons of original artwork donated by over 100 artists to be sold with a portion of the proceeds going to the For the Arts charity.

Bumbershoot

This year's Bumbershoot music festival at the Seattle Center featured The Shins, Wu-Tang, Crowded House, and Black Rebel Motorcycle Club among many others. The festival included three full days of music and an indie craft fair over the course of Labor Day Weekend.

Alternative – teaming up again with ReadyMade magazine – provided activities for this year’s festival attendees. Concert goers who wanted to take a break from the heat and get crafty swarmed the the ReadyMade booth to see some projects executed in recent issues of the magazine. Individuals also had the opportunity to customize their own Alternative tee with help from the ReadyMaders and stencils from Stencil 1. As with Pitchfork, our tee-decoration station was without a doubt the most popular activity!

Same time, different place: if you attended the POOL Tradeshow in Las Vegas, we hope you dropped by the S(eco)nd show to catch the latest in earth-friendly fashion. Alternative proudly sponsored this tradeshow and, in it, debuted our Alternative Earth line. ReadyMade and Alternative had a tee customization area to decorate your own limited edition eco-heather tee.

Pitchfork Music Festival

This year's Pitchfork Music Festival at Union Park in Chicago featured Sonic Youth, Slint, De La Soul, and Atlanta's own Cat Power and Mastodon. The festival included three full days of music, an indie craft fair, and Flatstock, the rock poster show.

Creative minds think alike! Alternative teams up with ReadyMade magazine – the bimonthly publication “for people who like to make stuff” -- to represent and get crafty with Pitchfork attendees. Creative concert-goers came into the ReadyMade booth to see some projects executed in recent issues of the magazine, and then they got to make their own poster tube out of discarded water bottles to safeguard their purchases from Flatstock. (Reuse! Recycle!) Best of all, attendees had the opportunity to customize their own Alternative tee with help from the ReadyMaders and stencils from Stencil 1. The tee decoration area was by far the most popular activity at Pitchfork.

In addition to all of the fun in the booth, ReadyMade offered subscriptions for only $5.00! We think they’re nuts, but we love them for it.

United Talent Agency Foundation's 1st Annual Big Bowl

The United Talent Agency (UTA) financially supports six charities annually, chosen democratically through their Employee Giving Program. This year, as a supplement to the program, UTA organized the First Annual UTA Big Bowl, where six teams representing the six charities raised funds to qualify in competing in a double elimination bowling tournament where the grand prize winners won cash donations for their charity. Over 100 agents and assistants participated in the Big Bowl Tournament.

The stakes were high for the six charity teams that supported: The Art of Elysium, The Bethany Project, Chrysalis, The Michael J. Fox Foundation, Much Love Animal Rescue, and Save Darfur. Initially the goal for the event was to raise $20,000 for the charities; UTA nearly doubled it by raising over $37,000 to go directly to the charities.

The UTA Foundation is a 501(c)3 nonprofit foundation formed by The United Talent Agency to guide its clients, agents, executives, and support staff in effective and rewarding philanthropic activity. The Foundation offers guidance on charitable giving partnerships, identifies reputable organizations with which to be associated, and augments their existing philanthropic efforts.

Alternative was proud to donate 16 shirts and hats to this year's winning team, who won money for the Bethany Project.

PROJECT Global Tradeshow

PROJECT Global Tradeshow collaborated with Swindle magazine and Andy Warhol by Levi’s, and Alternative at the 2007 show in Las Vegas, February 14 - 16. Using Alternative t-shirts as canvases, two graphic artists staged live screen-printings with some of Andy Warhol’s most famous iconic images at the red carpet Swindle / Andy Warhol by Levi’s lounge area. A limited number of these sought-after Warhol tees were given to early arrivals each morning.

The Andy Warhol by Levi’s fashion line is produced under license from The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, Inc. The collection draws inspiration from the iconic art and spirit of Andy Warhol, reinvigorating and reinterpreting elements of his work in a contemporary light.

“This was one of our best collaborations yet,” said Roger Gastman, Swindle’s Editor-In-Chief. “Swindle magazine is all about honoring the history of pop culture and celebrating design. By teaming up with Andy Warhol by Levi’s, and working with a like-minded brand such as Alternative, we are promoting the timeless connection between art and fashion.”

“I love what Roger and Shepard have done with Swindle,” said Sam Ben-Avraham, founder of the PROJECT Global Tradshow. “This was our second season working together, and they bring a dynamic energy to our shows. Andy Warhol by Levi’s presents a fresh, intelligent look at fashion and iconography, and Alternative provides the ultimate canvas for such creativity to come to life.”

“We were excited to work with Swindle and the iconic Andy Warhol by Levi’s brand on this exclusive screen printing event,” said Greg Alterman, founder and CEO of Alternative. “Our mission is to provide designers – big and small – with a premium canvas to express themselves. It was a great alliance and an unexpected perk for the PROJECT crowd.”

Launched in 2003 and held biannually in New York and Las Vegas, PROJECT is the foremost premium and contemporary global tradeshow where the best of the best in fashion gather to show, buy, network and define next year’s trends. What started out as a showcase of 50 brands in 2003 is now a staggering 600-plus, featuring the entire lifestyle by including both leaders and newcomers in men’s, women’s, kids’ and accessories. The lineup for PROJECT 2007 confirmed this fashion progression and the importance of designer denim and premium contemporary sportswear in the market, minds and closets of shoppers worldwide.

PROJECT Global Tradeshow Charity Event for GEMS

Alternative forms a creative collaboration with Swindle magazine and Royal Elastics at the 2007 PROJECT Global Tradeshow in New York City, taking place January, 22-24, 2007 at Pier 40.

Graphic artist Rocky Grimes – known for his one-of-a-kind designs –staged live screen printings of his exclusive creations at the special Swindle lounge on Project’s red carpet. Using Alternative “canvases,” these customized Royal Elastics T-shirts were given to PROJECT attendees in exchange for a suggested donation to the Girls’ Educational and Mentoring Services (GEMS), a nonprofit organization based in Harlem, NY, providing young women with critical educational and mentoring services.

“Alternative is thrilled to be working with Royal Elastics, Swindle and GEMS,” said Greg Alterman, Alternative’s founder and CEO. “It’s exciting to have our t-shirts as the creative canvas for such an inventive brand like Royal Elastics, and we applaud Swindle’s pioneering and influential voice. We’ve worked with Rocky in the past and his artistic vision represents what Alternative is all about – creativity, self-expression, individuality. This event is also a great opportunity to support many of our customers who are showing and buying at PROJECT, while recognizing and giving back to a worthy cause.”

“I’m excited to work together with innovative brands like Royal Elastics and Alternative in support and recognition of GEMS,” said Roger Gastman, editor-in-chief of Swindle. “My goal for this alliance at Project New York is to promote the importance of connecting community and philanthropy within the art, design, and fashion industries.”

Since 1999, GEMS has helped hundreds of girls – all of whom are 12-21 and have experienced sexual abuse and violence – to exit their abusive lifestyles, develop to their full potential, and create viable careers. "To-a-T" Exhibition

Alternative was an official sponsor of the Museum of Design Atlanta (MODA) and the Savannah College of Art & Design’s (SCAD’s) “To-a-T” exhibition, which debuted at MODA on October 19th, 2006 and ran through January 13th, 2007. Curated by Laura Moody of MODA and Sarah Phillips Collins of SCAD, “To-a-T” showcased the latest innovations in t-shirt design from across the globe, with a spotlight focus on designers from the Southern U.S.

As the official t-shirt provider for “To-a-T,” Alternative donated over 2000 shirts to celebrate the exhibition, which has toured around the U.S. following its Atlanta opening. “To-a-T” showcased the work of a variety of artists and designers, many of whom use Alternative shirts as the blank canvas for their one-of-a-kind creations. The exhibit contained a special foreword from Alternative‘s founder and creative director, Greg Alterman, and highlighted high-end couture garments, limited edition screenprints, hand embellishments, and imaginative reconstructed designs.

“To-a-T” also featured a special installation by local designer and t-shirt lover, Mychael Knight, who was recently seen on Bravo’s hit show “Project Runway” and voted the “Bravo TV Fan Favorite” of the competition. Other featured Atlanta artists included Esperanza, Pecan Pie Couture, Black Black Label, Amy Tangerine, and Epidemik Coalition.

“Alternative is thrilled to open the 'To-a-T' exhibit at MODA,” said Greg Alterman, founder and creative director of Alternative. 'To-a-T' is an amazing collection of art and design, and an ideal example of what Alternative is all about. The exhibit appreciates the t-shirt and shows its evolution from a basic wardrobe staple to a lifestyle. It’s exciting to be able to support a local organization that promotes our same philosophy of free-thinking and self expression, and also have the opportunity to put our canvases in the hands of so many talented designers and inspired individuals.”

Alternative’s involvement with MODA marks the company’s first long-term alliance with an Atlanta-based nonprofit and further emphasizes the company’s commitment to the t-shirt lifestyle and culture it inspires. All proceeds from Alternative t-shirt sales during the length of the exhibition will be donated to MODA for upcoming art and design initiatives.
